Canada 150 Projects Generate Excitement
in West Kelowna

A new skate park and outdoor amphitheatre have officially opened in West Kelowna creating community enthusiasm in advance of the nation’s sesquicentennial in just under a year.

The projects, located in Memorial Park in West Kelowna’s city centre, were made possible thanks to funding under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The new, more advanced skate park replaced a 30-year-old crumbling and unchallenging facility that was rarely used. In advance of the official opening, skate boarders were already flocking to the new facility to give it a try; and the park was creating a buzz with posts, pictures and video on social media. The outdoor amphitheatre hosted its first free, Music in the Park concert, during an official opening held July 15. For three weeks prior to the opening, the city had been fielding inquiries from residents on when they could use the new outdoor venue.

Memorial Park will be a main event site for the City of West Kelowna’s Canada 150th birthday celebrations on July 1, 2017, and the new skate park and outdoor amphitheatre will feature prominently in the milestone event.

Quotes

“Throughout Canada, communities are adding improved infrastructure and amenities for use by residents and visitors alike. Here in West Kelowna, the new Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program-funded skate park and amphitheatre will be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada.

“The skate park and outdoor amphitheatre are already proving incredibly popular and the community buzz surrounding them has been exciting to hear and see. These projects will undoubtedly create cultural and economic vitality in West Kelowna’s city centre and leave a true legacy in recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday. The City of West Kelowna thanks the Government of Canada for supporting these terrific projects under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.”
