TAKE THE STING OUT OF LITTER BUGS
Litter bugs are back and the City of West Kelowna is appealing to the public to help stop the blight that these inconsiderate people cause on the West Kelowna landscape.
Residents can report illegal dumping activity to West Kelowna’s Bylaw Enforcement Department by calling 778-797-8810 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. If possible, provide a licence plate number and a vehicle description. Pictures and videos of litter bugs illegally dumping their trash are also welcome.
Fines of up to $250 will be charged for illegal dumping in the City of West Kelowna.
Local bylaws prohibit dumping in all public places including road sides, parks and park trash bins, city properties and city waste receptacles and Crown land. Even those who pile trash on their own property can be fined and potentially charged for the cost of cleanup if residents don’t take care of their own mess.
With so many options available to manage waste, no one has any excuse to dump illegally. Options include:
Your own garbage, recycling and yard waste curbside bins or your strata or landlord’s bins
The Westside Residential Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre off Asquith Road
Designated recycling depots; see list at www.westkelownacity.ca/recyclingguide
The Glenmore Landfill off John Hindle Drive in the City of Kelowna
Junk collection or reuse companies; Google West Kelowna junk removal or West Kelowna restore
Local charities that collect good used clothes, furniture and appliances
Those who find that they routinely have more household garbage, recycling or yard waste than they can manage, can order extra curbside containers. To order more bins, visit Municipal Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Or download a form online 24/7 at www.westkelownacity.ca/wastemanagement; and return it in person or by mail to Municipal Hall, 2760 Cameron Road, West Kelowna, BC V1Z 2T6.
