You can not appeal your taxes. You can appeal your assessment by contacting the BC Assessment Authority at 1-866-ValueBC (1-866-825-8322) or visiting the BC Assessment Authority's website.
Penalties are mandated by provincial legislation and are not discretionary.
Under The Community Charter the municipality must charge a 10% penalty on late taxes. The City of West Kelowna charges a 10% penalty on all accounts that have current taxes outstanding as of the tax due date in July. Unclaimed home owner grants are considered late if not received by the tax due date and are penalty applicable.
Grants & Penalties
You can reduce your taxes owing by claiming grants you are eligible for. Until you claim the grant the total tax amount (column A on tax notice) is still outstanding.
If your total gross taxes owing was $1,000 and you were eligible for a grant of $770 the net taxes due would be $230.
If you applied for the grant before the tax due date in July but did not make a payment, the total of the 10% penalty would be $23 which would be added to your account the day after the tax due date in July.
If you did not apply for the grant before the tax due date and the entire $1,000 was left outstanding by the tax due date, the 10% penalty incurred would be $100 and added to your account the day after the tax due date in July.
